This tomato originated from the USSR but it first became popular all over the world to become popular in its native land only some time later. Lars Olov Rosentrom, a famous Swedish tomato breeder, visited the territory of the Crimean peninsula in the Soviet times. In the Crimea, he spotted a variety of an unusual black color, which was developed by amateur breeders, named it as Black Krim (Black Crimea) and brought the seeds of this unusual variety back home to Europe.

This tomato travelled from Europe to the United States where it was introduced to the SSE Yearbook and became the first black tomato to be commercially available in the United States.

The variety became very popular in the United States and was later introduced to its native land – the CIS (not the USSR any more). It was entered on the State Register of the Russian Federation under the name of Krymsky Chyornyi (Black Crimean) by Euro-Semena (a Russian company) in 2015.
